Views of Interest Around Philadelphia(43 images)
Snapshots of different views of Philadelphia from parks to trees to monuments to sports and a bridge connecting us to Camden as well as a famous burial location of our first residents. Philadelphia is an old historical city struggling to show what it has to offer visitors while also struggling with crime and a high dropout rate among its school population. Residents are still very proud while...

  • Acid rain is a broad term referring to a mixture of wet and dry deposition (deposited material) from the atmosphere containing higher than normal amounts of nitric and sulfuric acids. The precursors, or chemical forerunners, of acid rain formation result from both natural sources, such as volcanoes and decaying vegetation, and man-made sources, primarily emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) resulting from fossil fuel combustion. In the United States, roughly 2/3 of all SO2 and 1/4 of all NOx come from electric power generation that relies on burning fossil fuels, like coal. Acid rain occurs when these gases react in the atmosphere with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form various acidic compounds. The result is a mild solution of sulfuric acid and nitric acid. When sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released from power plants and other sources, prevailing winds blow these compounds across state and national borders, sometimes over hundreds of miles. • International Exposition of 1876, Memorial Hall, Belmont Avenue, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA. Memorial Hall is one of Fairmount Park's most recognizable landmarks and the only major building left from the 1876 Centennial Exposition. Acid rain causes acidification of lakes and streams and contributes to the damage of trees at high elevations (for example, red spruce trees above 2,000 feet) and many sensitive forest soils. In addition, acid rain accelerates the decay of building materials and paints, including irreplaceable buildings, statues, and sculptures that are part of our nation's cultural heritage. Prior to falling to the earth, sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) gases and their particulate matter derivatives--sulfates and nitrates--contribute to visibility degradation and harm public health. • Steven Norman Carlton (born December 22, 1944 in Miami, Florida) is a former left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball, from 1965 to 1988, who retired as one of the most successful pitchers to ever play the game, elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994. He was affectionately known to Philadelphia fans as "Lefty." Carlton has the second-most lifetime strikeouts of any left-handed pitcher (4th overall), and the second-most lifetime wins of any left-handed pitcher (11th overall). He was the first pitcher to win four Cy Young Awards in a career. He held the lifetime strikeout record several times between 1982 and 1984, before his contemporary Nolan Ryan passed him. One of his most remarkable records was accounting for nearly half (46%) of his team's wins, when he won 27 games for the last-place (59-97) 1972 Phillies. He is still the last National League pitcher to win 25 or more games in one season [1], as well as the last pitcher from any team to throw more than 300 innings in a season.[2] By photographer William Crane
