  • Mountain Brood<br />
This June, periodical Cicadas (genus Magicicada) can be seen and heard by the millions in some areas of the NC mountains. Here they've left their shells behind on the leaves of a large maple growing on the campus of Mars Hill College. Differing from their larger relatives that breed annually, the members of this brood live underground for 17 years before emerging simultaneously as adults. This population (known as Brood 14) won't be seen again in NC until the year 2025. By photographer Independent Weekly
