  • April 7, 2009. Hasankeyf, Turkey...Erkhan walks up the hill of an ancient cave dwelling still used by locals as a shed for their livestock. Erkhan and his family will be relocated by the state if the Ilisu dam is built. Hasankeyf is an ancient city on the river Tirgris first settled by man possibly as early as 10,000 years ago. Archaeological studies have yet to reveal its true history, but evidence of Mongolian invasions and Roman tiling show that it is rich in heritage. The Turkish government plans to build a massive dam down river at Ilisu which would submerge the city under water, but national and international campaigns against the project continue to stall the foreign credits given by European governments to fund the controversial undertaking.
