  • Someone once called Yasser Arafat the symbol of Palestine and until his death he would be recognized as such...In 2000, increasing Israeli oppression culminated in a famous 'walk' by Ariel Sharon and a few thousand soldiers to Jerusalem's holy Al-Aqsa Mosque. This incident, along with the killing of 12 year-old Palestinian boy caught on tape inflamed an already tense situation and the second Intifada (uprising) began. During this time Arafat, pressured by Israel to calm the uprising, had little control over his people and virtually became a prisoner inside his Ramallah compound. ....In late 2004, Arafat, still confined to his compound, became sick and less than a week later flew to France where he died on November 11, 2004.
