  • The Texas Theater, which opened in 1931 and was once part of a chain of theaters owned by Howard Hughes, is being restored to it's original Spanish Eclectic style by the Oak Cliff Foundation.  Having fallen on hard times, as had the neighborhood, and suffered an electrical fire that blackened the seating area, it is set to open again as a venue for regional live theater. It is also where Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested in 1963 for the murder of a president. By photographer Peter Calvin

  • Jesus Najera, in his sporting goods store that caters primarily to soccer players and fans,  Deportes Najera, 434 W. Jefferson Blvd, Dallas, Texas.  Jesus, while working for the soccer shoe manufacturer Lotto, began selling shoes out of his car at the parks around town during the weekend soccer matches.  Today, with an established business on Jefferson, he makes a weekly road trip to Guanajuato to buy the authentic team merchandise his customers expect.   • Wonderland Tropicals, 200 W. Jefferson Blvd, Dallas, Texas. Lt to Rt, Brothers Cesar and Saul Valdez bought the business in 2000 because of their love of birds.  The bird is a Military Macaw. Jefferson)  The business has been at the same location for 50 years, and Mike has owned it for the last 27.  the  shelves behind him are sized for the 78 RPM records the store sold when it opened, and the phone that Dallas Police Officer JD Tippet used just before being shot by Lee Harvey Oswald still hangs on the end of the counter. Another JFK/Oswald connection: After shooting President Kennedy,  Lee Harvey Oswald returned to Oak Cliff, and while passing this gas station, thew his coat into the back of a car on their lot...
