Pradal Serey, which translates as 'Free Fighting' was banned under the brutal Khmer Rouge Regime of the 1970's which claimed the lives of an estimated 1.7 million Cambodians. However, since the relative peace of recent times Khmer Boxing has become increasingly popular and televised fights are held every week.

Fighters are usually aged between 14 and 25, from poor backgrounds and make on average only 20 US dollars per fight. This amount increases the more successful the fighter becomes.
