Land-grabbing is taking place all over Cambodia and no more so than in the capital Phnom Penh. Whole communities are often forcibly removed, their homes destroyed and left with little or no compensation. The land they have occupied for generations are marked for development often by foreign investors.

Dey Krahorm is a 'slum' area in central Phnom Penh. The residents have been fighting a long lasting battle with developers to stay on the land or receive appropriate compensation. The people of this community face an uncertain future and they are the target of regular intimidation by those who want them out.

Phnom Penh is currently undergoing a 'beautification' process by the local authorities and sites such as Dey Krahorm are seen as an eyesore and prime locations for commercial development.

Many of the homes at the site have now been destroyed by the developers and some of the community have accepted the compensation they were offered or been relocated to other areas. However, many of those who have been relocated have found themsevles many miles outside of the city in the middle of no-where and without the means to make a living.

The residents still remaining at Dey Krahorm and similar sites across the capital are holding out to defend their land and homes. These images are from Dey Krahorm and Group 78 communities.
