  • This whole body bone scan image is created when a patient ingests a small amount of short lived radioactive material. This area of diagnostics is called nuclear medicine. The radiopharmaceuticals used in nuclear medicine emit ('give off') gamma rays, which are a high-energy type of radiation. Gamma rays can be detected by a specialized gamma ray camera. The camera is attached to a computer which creates the resulting image. This type of image is looking for areas of uneven radiation.
