In 2006, the brothers Herbert and Ashman Wildshire, then 18 and 13 years old founded the youth center "My Neighbors and Me" in their own small family backyard in Belize City. The social situation in their neighborhood was deteriorating rapidly and they wanted to do something about it. "My neighborhood is neither scenic nor developed, and is indeed a centralized area of poverty and crime. Children growing up here are rarely exposed to productive activities. There are a lot of teen pregnancies, guns and violence. So we had a choice let our neighborhood fall into drugs, prostitution, and crime, or try to make a difference."The brothers started not only a community center but educational program which includes different cultural activities like theater, music and dance as well as a help with homework in the afternoon.In February 2007 the project ,,My Neighbors and Me" won the "San Marino UNICEF Award" because of their extraordinary work in one of the many economically poor neighborhoods of Belize City.
