New Sudan -- Abyei & Oil(11 images)
  • The boundary areas between the North and the South are heavily militarized.  The oil rich area of Abyei lies at the cross roads of the Arab north and the African south and is at the center of a complex and fiercley contested battle between the governments of northern and southern Sudan over who exactly has rights to the area.  The town of Abyei was nearly destroyed by fighting in mid-May 2008 between The Sudan People's Liberation Movement of the south and the Northern Sudanese Armed Forces. By photographer J Carrier

  • Some thirty bulls were slaughtered for the arrival of the controversial new governor for the Abyei area and Soldiers of the Sudan People's Liberation Army outside the town of Abyei which was a just weeks later destroyed by fighting between the Sudan People's Liberation Army and the Sudanese Armed Forces among other proxy militias of the northern regime. Abyei lies at the heart of an oil rich area disputed between the Northern and Southern governments of Sudan; heavily militarized the town has witnessed an increase in severe clashes between forces of the Southern People's Liberation Army and Messeriya herders supported by the Sudanese Armed Forces and the northern regime in Khartoum, following a pattern that was seen in the previous north-south civil war and more recently in the Darfur Region.   • Employees of the Great Wall Drilling Company on the Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company oil fields in the process of "rigging up" a new oil rig which will in just a few days time begin producing oil.   • Just to the north of the town of Bentiu in the oil rich area of Unity State villagers pushed off of their land by the Sudanese government eager to please the international oil companies struggle to survive by fishing on the edges of roads built and financed by these companies in the Sud swampland.  International oil companies have long been a presence in these parts of Sudan with the discovery of oil in the region by Chevron, most recently it is Chinese and Asian companies who are carting of the countries oil resources.
