• On a quiet Sellwood street, inside a textured silver box on wheels, Kevin Sandri roasts chicken saltimbocca, assembles farm-fresh salads and lays down a tone-perfect Jersey meatball hero. If Tony Soprano ran the farm-to-table movement, it would be like Garden State, right down to the picnic tables in a gravel lot.

Sellwood lucked out in 2008 when Sandri's old-time string band went bust and he went looking to live the new Portland dream: on his own terms, with little money and a serious passion for food. He borrowed $30,000 for a custom-built cart and set out to employ his Sicilian roots using local ingredients. His changing sandwiches ($6-$8), salads and daily specials ($9-$10) blend Italian deli classics with restrained innovation and farmer connections normally reserved for top chefs.

That meatball hero soars because Sandri has done the homework and the math. He hits that righteous ratio of dense, juicy meat to bread (a buttery-crusty Philly-style roll), all packaged with a hint of cheese and just enough marinara to grease the works. Sandri swears the recipe is straight from his mom's note cards in New Jersey, but even Mom isn't using 21-day aged Highland Oak beef from the Stayton farm also favored by the fine-dining destination Paley's Place. Menu temptations include arancini (fried risotto balls) for a mere $1. But watch for specials, like pulled pork with homemade watermelon pickles or the terrific Devil's Chicken ($9.50), a bio-dynamic bird marinated all day in a thick powerhouse of calabrian chiles, mustard and garlic that majestically clings to the beautifully bronzed skin.
• Bomber Gas has been a landmark in the Portland area since 1947, when it arrived and became the region's most unusual filling station.
