In 2003 Liberia emerged from a two-decade civil war that destroyed the countrys infrastructure, displaced hundreds of thousands of people, collapsed the economy, and put Liberia near the bottom of the UNDPs human development index.

President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, the first democratically elected female President of an African Nation, has considerable support in the international community and has succeeded in bringing a number of development projects to the country.

But Liberians remain uneasy as 80% unemployment continues and basic services like water and electricity are scarce. Most of the capitals buildings and infrastructure, including its water and electrical grids, were burned down. Squatters occupy many of the abandoned buildings and most of the city operates without light.
