  • Brian Haw, whose permanent protest against U.S. and British foreign policy began in front of the British Parliament in London in June of 2001, on February 2, 2005. In 2005, the House of Commons passed the Serious Organized Crime and Police Act, which sought to ban Mr. Haw's demonstration and to impose conditions on all other demonstrations within one kilometer of Parliament. Mr. Haw successfully argued in the British High Court that the Act did not apply to him, as the wording of the Act requires police permission before a demonstration may begin, and his encampment preceded the act. He was the only person in the world who could legally demonstrate within a kilometer of Parliament without prior police permission until an appeals court ruled against him in May of 2006 and his display was largely dismantled. Mr. Haw remains in Parliament Square, and has threatened a hunger strike in protest. By photographer Geoffrey King
