These portraits speak of the daily life, survival, and ritual of women and children displaced by violence in Darfur and Northern Uganda. Refugees from Darfur walked for weeks, while others hid for months in the bush without nourishment, arriving in neighboring Chad terrified, weak and malnourished. While in Northern Uganda, pregnant women walked for 50 miles to give birth in an NGO clinic--hiding in the night behind scant bushes lest the Lord's Resistance Army take their babies. It's survival, and despite circumstances of war, displacement, dispossession, fear, and violence: the people portrayed in these images kept their dignity, humor, and hospitality.
