The national youth symphony orchestra (OSJ) of El Salvador was founded in 1995 by Doctor José Antonio Abreu, creator of the youth symphony orchestra system in Venezuela. The association ,,ProArte", started by a group of Salvadorean artists in 1960, administrates the OSJ as well as the academy of music in San Salvador. Due to the abstinence of a national conservatory in El Salvador ProArte wanted to create a classical music movement as a tool for a positive development of personal expression for young people. It's the longest functioning youth orchestra in Central America.
As part of the popularization of the ratification of the Integral protection Law for youths and adolescents in El Salvador by the Legislative Assembly, UNICEF and the OJS started a special joint venture in 2009.
During the first concert of the season Six Salvadorean renown artists created paintings accompanied by the national juvenile symphonic orchestra. Each painting should be related to the central aspects of the new law like the right for Education and Protection in society. UNICEF has supported the Orchestra since the beginning of 2009 summer season with a communication campaign to spread out the work of the OJS in the country. The paintings from inauguration day will be auctioned in the near future in benefit to the children of the Orchestra.
Thirteen year old Kevin David Ramirez plays bassoon in the juvenile symphony orchestra of San Salvador. He started playing bassoon with 10 years, then entered in the Academy of Music one year later. At the age of 11 he directly started to play in the national orchestra and won the price of the fastest and one of the best members of the SJO in the annual competition of 2007.
