The Youth Talents program of the University of San Salvador started in 1997 with a small group of 18 students. It was created as a program for talented students from the national education system to develop their skills in maths, physics, chemistry and biology.
To enter the program children have to pass an annual test to show their capability in maths an sciences. The test is open to every child in the country, no mater from which department or social background, gender or religion. In ten years since the creation 1200 children have passed through the classrooms of the Youth Talent Program.
Twelve years old Pablo, first blind student at the Youth Talents Program.
When Pablo was 2 years old he was getting ill because of hydrocephalus. Before his situation turned better many years he had to fight for his life. And he did but as a consequence of his previous illness he got blinded. But Pablo didn't stop to struggle for himself and until today continues to explore the world with his open mind.
Today Pablo is 12 years old. He lives with his parents, his brother and cousin in the city of San Salvador. Since Pablo went to primary school his parents had to fight for his way to take part in society. Until today in El Salvador there is no specialized integral education program offered by the state for blinded kids like Pablo. His mother Rosa claims ,,Pablo is an excellent student. He likes to read and learn about history. But there are little opportunities in the country. There are only few books in braille at the national library, and he already read them all. He could read more." Last year in mid 2008 Pablo had send a self written poem, witch was required for the inscription for the test to enter the national Youth Talents Program. He was invited and not because of his handicap but aptitude in the exploration of numbers, science and art - he became the first blind student at the Saturday academy at the University of San Salvador.
