Archive

Overview

Your archive is a secure, private representation of all the images that you upload to PhotoShelter. Like your desktop operating system, you can create folders within folders, and store a wide variety of common image formats like JPG, TIF, RAW, PSD, PDF and more.

The Archive Browser provides a split-window design to simplify the navigation of your archive.

Nested Folders

The "Archive Browser" interface is split into two main components:
  • Navigator: The list of folders in your archive. The navigator appears on the left.
  • Image Browser: The thumbnails of images contained within a given archival folder.

Navigator

Hiding the Navigator

A gray, vertical bar separates the Navigator from the Image Browser. When you pass your mouse cursor over it, it turns blue. Clicking on this bar will collapse the Navigator leaving you with more screen real estate to view your thumbnails.

Click the bar again to reveal the Navigator.

Viewing images in a Folder:

Click on a folder name to view the images within that folder. If there are nested folders, you will see them displayed in the Navigator, not the Image Browser.

The current folder is highlighted in blue in the Navigator.

To find a specific image, click the "Image Search" link.

Creating a Nested Folder:

There are two main methods of nesting folders:
  1. Drag a folder into another folder:
    • Click and hold the folder icon (not the name) of the folder you want to move.
    • Drag it over a destination folder
    • Release your mouse
    • The folder is now located in the destination folder.
  2. Create a new folder:
    • Click the folder you want to create a nested folder within (the selected folder is highlighted in blue). For a top-level folder, click on any white space in the Navigator.
    • Click the "New Folder" button at the top of the Navigator.
    • You can't have a folder with the same name as another folder at the same level.

Name Uniqueness:

You cannot have a folder with the same name as another folder at the same level. For example, if you have a folder called "2006", you can't have two nested folders directly inside "2006" named "News." You could have a "2006" and "2005" folder, both with nested folders named "News."

Image Browser

The Image Browser displays thumbnails contained within an Archival Folder.

# per page

Thumbnails will fill the width of the page. You may choose the number of images to view per page by using the button at the upper right hand corner of the screen. If the number of images in a given folder exceeds the number of images you have selected to view per page, you will see a "pagination menu" at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Click on the arrow to advance to the next page. You may jump to a particular page of images by choosing that page from the drop-down menu.

Working with Thumbnails

We use iconography under each thumbnail to signify various attributes of the image.
  • = searchable (image info section will also be pink when an image is searchable)
  • = priced
  • = tagged
By default the thumbnails appear at 100 pixels in the longest dimension. You can toggle to a larger size (200 pixels) by clicking the "Large" button next to the "View" options. The resulting image is 4x larger in area, which works great for larger screens.

By default, the thumbs are 100px.
Larger thumbnails (200px) are available by clicking the "Large" button.

Selecting Images

Simply click on any image to select it. When an image is selected, it will appear with an orange border around it. You may click it once again to deselect it.

To select multiple thumbnails, click the first image you'd like to select, and drag your mouse across every other image you'd like to include in the selection. When you are done selecting images, release the mouse, and the entire area you've covered will be selected for a "batch action".

To enlarge an image, double-click it.

You may also select in batch by clicking one of the text links under the action buttons.

  • Viewable: selects only the images that are displayed on the current page. For example, if you have your "images per page" set to 10, but your folder contains 64 images, clicking "Viewable" will only select 10 images.
  • All: selects all images in the folder.
  • None: deselects all images in the folder.

Performing Batch Actions

The batch actions appear as buttons above the thumbnails. We've given the most common actions their own buttons, while less common features appear under "More Actions" or "Edit." When no images are selected, the buttons are deactivated. Select at least one image will activate the Batch Actions.

Editing a Folder Name

From the navigator load a folder into the image browser. Hover your mouse over the name of the folder located above your thumbnail images - the folder name will appear yellow. Click the file name, edit the name of the folder and be sure to save your changes.

Viewing Folder Detail

Folder description and time/date information can be accessed by clicking the "detail" link under the folder name. You can click the description to edit it.

Moving Images to Another Folder with Drag and Drop

You can drag and drop image(s) from the Image Browser to a Navigator folder.
Note: This method of moving only supports visible thumbnails (i.e. you can't "select all" images that exceed a given page and move them). If you want to move all images, click the "More Actions" button.
To move a single image:
  • Click and hold the gray area of a thumbnail.
  • Drag the image over your target folder in the Navigator.
To move multiple images:
  • Select one or many images.
  • Click and drag the images. The "box" that follows your cursor as you drag indicates how many images are being moved.
  • Drag the image over your target folder in the Navigator.

FAQ

Can I have folders that are named the same?
Yes, as long as they are not at the same level. For example:
  • 2006
    • Portraits
  • 2005
    • Portraits
However, if you tried to move the 2005 Portraits folder into 2006, you would receive an error indicating that a folder already exists with that name.
