Uploading Images

Overview

FTP (file transfer protocol) allows you to use common FTP software (e.g. Fetch, Transmit, SmartFTP) to upload files to PhotoShelter. Since FTP is an insecure protocol (i.e. your username and password are transmitted unencrypted), the PhotoShelter FTP mechanism uses a separate login/password combination.

Basic and Standard accounts do not allow inbound FTP. Standard accounts allow one active username/password account. Pro accounts can have multiple, active combinations. This allows other users to upload into your account (e.g. retouchers, second shooters, etc).

At the "Incoming FTP" option located under the Upload menu (Click here to open this page in a new browser window), click "Add a new incoming FTP user". You should then see the "Add FTP User" dialog:

Configuring PhotoShelter for inbound FTP

  • In the "Username" field, please create and enter a username to identify any transfers that come in from this account. We strongly suggest creating a username that is unique from your regular PhotoShelter account information for security reasons.
  • In the "Password" field, please make note of the password that has been generated for you. You may either copy this password or change it to something that's easier to remember.
  • The "Active" box allows you to determine whether or not this FTP user account is active. Make sure this box is checked - otherwise, this login info will not work. If you are a Standard account holder, you may only have 1 active FTP user per account. You may upgrade to a Pro account if you'd like to add unlimited FTP users to be able to transfer images to your account.
  • Selecting an Archive Folder and/or a Gallery at this stage is optional. If you select a folder and/or gallery here, by default all images transferred using this FTP user account will end up in this given folder and/or gallery in your PhotoShelter account.
  • Make sure that you have your username and password recorded, and click "Add FTP user."

Using an FTP client software

(This example uses the program "Transmit" for the Mac)

  • "Server" or "Host" should be ftp.photoshelter.com
  • "User Name" should match what you entered in the "Username" field in your PhotoShelter account.
  • "Password" should match the password you entered in the "Password" field in your PhotoShelter account.
  • The Protocol should be "FTP"
  • Click "Connect."
  • Drag and drop files to upload. You will not see any files in the folder as they are completed.
  • Your files can be viewed in your Archive Browser. It may take a few minutes for the files to appear.

You can use any FTP program to upload images into PhotoShelter. In this example, we're using Transmit from Panic Software.

I don't have an FTP client can you make some recommendations?

There are many FTP clients available for Mac, PC and Linux users. Here are some of the more popular. (Use at your own risk.)

How long does it take for my images to appear in my archive?

Images will start to appear in your archive shortly after they have completed upload. If you are "parked" on the archive browser folder you will need to navigate away and come back to refresh your view.

I've transfered images but don't see them. What happened?

Clicking on a FTP Username in your FTP Upload Configuration section will show the details of transfers that reported an error. Check first to see if the upload was successful.

If no errors were reported and you are "parked" on the archive browser folder where the image should be you will need to navigate away to another folder and come back to refresh your view.

How many FTP upload accounts can I have?

Standard subscribers have a single FTP login. Pro accounts allow for unlimited FTP logins. Please upgrade to a Pro subscription if you require unlimited FTP users!

How quickly will my images upload?

Images will upload as fast as the internet connection you are working from. You can use this link to test your internet connection speed and calculate upload time based on the provided results.

Can I price and/or make image publicly searchable during upload?

No sorry this cannot take place during the upload process. Please use the PhotoShelter interface to apply pricing and publicly searchable permission.
