Post to Social Networks

Overview

In order to provide photographers with the ability to "virally" extend their marketing reach, public PhotoShelter gallery and image pages may feature a Post to Social Networks button, which website visitors may use to easily share links within their Facebook, Twitter, or other common online communities.

Adding Social Network Posting to Your Website

If you use a PhotoShelter theme for the look & feel of your site, head to the My Website -> Customization -> Pages section to set your preferences accordingly.

Here you will have the option to enable the "Post to Social Networks" option on the Gallery Display page and/or the Gallery Image Display page.

If you check this box, the following graphic will appear on your website:

If you are using manual customization (meaning that you have overridden your website theme and you or your designer is comfortable changing the look & feel of your PhotoShelter site using HTML & CSS), you have the option to change the text and image of the "Post to Social Networks" function. Details on that are available here:

Post Your Gallery to Facebook, Flickr, SportsShooter, and Twitter

Don't want to leave the PhotoShelter back-end to post your own content to Facebook, Flickr and Twitter? No worries!

To post a gallery to your Facebook wall, a Facebook fan page, or to upload your archived images directly to Facebook Photos, use the "Facebook/Flickr/Social" link in the Batch Actions menu of any gallery and follow the directions accordingly.

The social media functions only display when your gallery has a visibility of "public"

Facebook requires you to login remotely by entering your e-mail and password. You need a Facebook account to use this feature.

Once you are authenticated, you have the choice of:

  • Upload images: Your images are physically uploaded to Facebook into a new album sharing the name of your gallery. When the images have completed upload, you will need to approve the photos.
  • Post a link: If you have concerns about Facebook's Terms & Conditions and prefer not to upload, you can post a link on your Wall to drive traffic back to your website.
  • "Photos" or Fan Page: If you have set up one or more Fan Pages for your business, you will see a second drop-down menu from which you'll select your desired destination for your photos or link– either your "Photos" page (for your personal account) or your Fan Page.

A Facebook Wall post provides a backlink to your website, and does not upload your images to Facebook.

One last thing: It's possible to post PhotoShelter slideshows to your Fan Page, but that has to be done outside of the Export tool. Check out photographer Nathan Armes' helpful blog tutorial for step-by-step instructions on taking your Fan Page to the next level.

Post to Flickr

Flickr requires you to login and allow PhotoShelter to transfer photos. You need a Flickr/Yahoo! account to use this feature. You need to set your export options before you click the "Export to Flickr" button.

The first time you use the feature, you will be taken to the Flickr login screen.

After you successfullly login, you will have to authorize PhotoShelter as a third party application to post to your account.

Once you have authorized the application, the transfer will begin immediately. There will be no real-time indication that the transfer is occurring. You can login to Flickr to see the images in your photo stream. Note: your Flickr privacy settings determine whether images are public or not.

If your gallery is set to public, you will see a "Tweet This" link just below the "Social Networks" link referenced above.

Click this, and a new window will open to your Twitter page, where you'll see that a new tweet has been started with some pre-populated text and an abbreviated link to the gallery of your choice. Note: If you don't see anything and are just taken to the Twitter homepage, make sure you're logged into Twitter!

The feature automatically shortens the URL to your website using http://bit.ly. You can always modify the text before you tweet. You must click "update" to post to Twitter.
