The western face of the United States Capitol building, along with the Peace Monument; Washington, D.C. The Peace Monument (also known as the Naval Monument or Civil War Sailors Monument) is located on the western grounds of the Capitol complex. The 44 foot high white marble memorial was erected in 1877-1878 to commemorate the naval deaths at sea during the American Civil War. Two classically robed female figures stand at the top of the monument: Grief and History. Grief holds her covered face against the shoulder of History and weeps in mourning. History holds a stylus and a tablet with the inscription "They died that their country might live." Victory stands below Grief and History, holding a laurel wreath and carrying an oak branch. Below her are the infant Mars, the god of war, and the infant Neptune, god of the sea.
