These 20 images depict the rise of the millions strong climate movement in 2009. Each image is from an important moment or event in the buildup of civil society and youth over the course of the year. Although the final result in Copenhagen was a failure, these activists know that they are not done yet and vow to fight until the end.

  • Aliens descend on the Barcelona climate talks asking to be taken to the climate leaders. They wandered around the conference center for hours and were not able to find any climate leaders.   • On day 32 of a hunger strike, the members of the Climate Justice fast held a press conference at the UNFCCC COP 15 in Copenhagen. Climate Justice Fast! was an international hunger strike to call for strong, just action on the climate crisis. It took place from the 6th of November 2009 until the conclusion of the failed Copenhagen climate talks on the 18th of December.

  • Leah Wickham, from Fiji, breaks into tears on the opening day of the Copenhagen summit. TckTckTck - an unprecedented alliance of civil society organisations - delivered its petition which more than 10 million people have signed, calling for world leaders to seal a fair, ambitious and binding climate deal at the talks. 15 young people from around the world held large scale "building blocks" which spell out "10 million people expect a fair, ambitious and binding deal" to show world leaders that all the elements required for an effective climate treaty are present. Young people from around the world handed over the petition to UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de Boer and Danish Climate Minister and the President of COP15 Connie Hedegaard. Leah Wickham, from Fiji, spoke briefly on behalf of the 10 million people expecting a real deal at Copenhagen.
