Polish President Lech Kaczynski and many of the country's top leaders were killed in a plane crash on route to the site of a Soviet massacre of Polish officers during World War II. Memorials were held in the following week. Thousands attended ceremonies in Krakow on April 18 for the funeral. The day began with a mass at St. Mary's Basilica and ended with a burial at the Wawel Castle.
