  • A Grumman F7F Tigercat owned by Mike Brown is taxied along the ramp prior to departure from Stead Field in Nevada after the conclusion of the 2007 Reno National Championship Air Races. There were 364 of the twin engined fighters built during World War II, and shortly thereafter, of which there are six that are still considered airworthy. Originally Grumman had been contracted to build 500 of the aircraft for use by the US Marine Corps to be used as close air support of the landing operations that were planned in the Pacific. The British built aircraft was originally delivered to the German Air Force in 1959 and was brought to the United States in 1985. Modified for racing the standard Rolls Royce Merlin motor has been replaced by a Rolls Royce Griffon motor that includes contra rotating propellers as well as a smaller canopy.  Photographed 09/07

  • Ray Diekman taxies a Grumman built F8F Bearcat along the ramp at Stead Field in Nevada. The Bearcat was designed as an interceptor with a high rate of climb to counter the Japanese kamikaze threat. The first Bearcat squadron became operational in May of 1945 but World War II ended before the aircraft saw combat service. It was largely replaced as a front line fighter with the arrival of jets prior to the beginning of the Korean War. Their were 1,126 Bearcats produced of which approximately 11 airworthy examples remain. Photographed 09/07

Grumman Aircraft originally designed the plane in 1935 and was the first all-metal, carrier launched, monoplane fighter purchased by the U.S. Navy.   • The Grumman built XF8F-1 Bearcat, owned and piloted by Howard Pardue, taxies along the ramp at Stead Field in Nevada following the 2007 Reno Air Races. BuNo 88458 is one of the first two prototypes ordered by the U.S. Navy in 1943. The Bearcat entered the Navy's air squadrons to late to see action in World War II and was quickly replaced by jets as a front line fighter in the years immediately following the war. next
