  • Mike Brown taxies his Grumman F7F Tigercat along the ramp prior to a heat race during the 2008 Reno National Championship Air Races at Stead Field in Nevada. There were 364 of the twin engined fighters built during World War II, and shortly thereafter, of which there are six that are still considered airworthy. Originally Grumman had been contracted to build 500 of the aircraft for use by the US Marine Corps to be used as close air support of the landing operations that were planned in the Pacific.

During Friday's heat race Argonaut's R3350 motor suffered a catostrophic failure forcing Stephens to mayday and expertly pilot the aircraft to an emergency landing while streaming flames and smoke.

Mangold, who also competes in the Red Bull Air Races, finished second in the Jet Class Gold race with a speed of 499.272 miles per hour on the 47.6658 mile course.

  • In March of 1944, Pratt & Whitney requested a F4U-1 Corsair from Vought Aircraft for evaluation of their new P&W R-4360,28 cylinder engine. Vought transferred F4U-1, BuNo 02460 (Birdcage Canopy) to see if the airframe and engine were compatible. The tests proved successful and Goodyear Aircraft of Akron, Ohio was given the F2G program. <br />

N5588N, Race #57, was tested at Port Columbus, Oh. and NAS Patuxent from 10/45 to 7/46. After being stricken from Navy records in January of 1948 the aircraft was purchased by Cook Cleland, supposedly for spare parts. The aircraft was flown by pilot Ben McKillen Jr. in the 1949 Tinnerman and Thompson Trophy Races.<br />

After passing through a number of owner the aircraft was acquired in 1996 by Robert Odegaard of Kindred, ND. who restored it to be the only flying F2G Corsair.

Bob was an instructor pilot in the P-38 lightning during the World War II and became an ace in the Korean War flying the F-86 Sabre. Bob also participated regularly at the Reno Air Races each September. Bob passed away in the fall of 1986 and his Mustang since been owned by Russ Francis, Bill Dause, and is now owned by Dream Machines LLC.
